Expectations

PGY-1

  • Gain a facile ability in assessment of burn wound severity (Partial thickness, Full thickness)
  • Learn the principles of wound care including a general understanding of wound dressing options
  • Become competent in skin graft harvesting and management of donor sites
  • Develop an understanding for diagnosis and surgical management of necrotizing soft tissue infections including antibiotic treatment
  • Become comfortable with the postoperative care and management of burn and soft tissue patients. Including management of common comorbidities such as diabetes and opioid use disorder.
  • Become facile with suture closure of wounds

PGY-2

  • Build on burn wound and NSTI assessment skills to include exfoliative skin disorders and limb salvage.
  • Develop more sophisticated knowledge of wound management including operative decision-making and planning.
  • Learn the techniques and options of burn wound excision
  • Learn the common techniques for amputation of lower extremities (i.e. TMA, BKA, AKA)
  • Become facile at managing the service with significant autonomy and decision-making under the direction of the BST attendings
  • Develop a basic understanding for pain management in the thermally injured patient
  • Become competent with burn critical care issues (i.e. escharotomy, fluid resuscitation, inhalation injury management, nutrition)
