Expectations

Resident schedules

  • Touch base with Dr Miller at the start of your rotation to discuss your goals and expectations
  • Call/text or secure chat with each attending about inpatients before cases
  • Update the spreadsheet by Friday- communicate any changes that may occur through the week regarding coverage
    • Please try to communicate and work with the FAs for coverage.
    • Don’t schedule a resident for cases they can’t cover
    • The earlier the schedule is done, the easier it is for us to ensure coverage where needed
  • Schedule educational activity with the attending on call for the week
  • Be on time for cases, confirm that IPHR and consent are done and you should roll into the room with the patient.
  • Prepare ahead of time for cases, touch base with operating attending and have a plan for what you would like to get out of the case.
  • Each resident should be scheduled to spend at least one-half day in the office with each surgeon

Call and patient coverage

  • Attending call schedule can be found on Amion. We usually cover M-T and F-S.  The M-T attending is the attending on call for the week and point of contact.
  • Consults during working hours can be staffed with the attending of record for the patient. If they are not accessible, the attending on call covers
  • The attending on call covers for vacation/away attendings
  • MMC rounding will be done by the operating attending at MMC, we will communicate amongst ourselves and let you know otherwise.

Robotics

  • You should be working your way through the robotics curriculum
  • If it has been two months or more since you have been on the robot or you are feeling unfamiliar, reach out to the Intuitive rep for a refresher.
  • Scrub in and do bedside cases, they are useful for learning how to troubleshoot from the console
  • Work through simulator modules: if you want console time you must be familiar with and at least competent using the console:
    • Clutching, camera control and pedals
    • Your level of interest and proficiency will guide how much you get to do in cases
    • If you are not safe, you will be removed from the console.
